INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Public schools across the county open Aug. 10 as Indian River County students return to classrooms for the 2026-27 school year. School zones will be active, requiring drivers to slow to 20 mph when lights are flashing. Students are asked to arrive at bus stops about 10 minutes early.
Buses often run behind schedule the first few days while routes settle. Drivers should expect heavier morning traffic Monday.
Roseland Road drivers will need a detour next week while crews repair the railroad crossing. The crossing will close at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, and stay shut until 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, for surface maintenance. Traffic will be routed along County Road 512 and U.S. Highway 1.
High schools will start at 7:20 a.m. this year, a change the School Board approved in February. Middle and K-8 schools begin at 8:10 a.m., and elementary schools start at 9 a.m. Wabasso School and IR Prep will keep their own schedules.
The start of the year also brings major campus shifts. Several schools changed locations over the summer as the district consolidated underused buildings and expanded popular magnet programs into K-8 models.
Vero Beach High School’s ninth-graders moved onto the main campus. Oslo Middle relocated and was renamed Vero Beach Middle. Osceola Magnet and Rosewood Magnet shifted to former middle school sites. Glendale Elementary merged into Citrus Elementary. The district spent about $3.5 million from its capital budget on the transitions.
