VERO LAKE ESTATES – A 73-year-old woman who was found in a pond Tuesday morning in a Vero Lake Estates has died.

The woman was found face down in the water near a home in the 9400 block of 87th Steet about 10:30 a.m., according to Indian River County Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Eric Flowers.

“It appears to be accidental,” Lt. Flowers told Sebastian Daily. Detectives believe she hit her head on some steps while feeding ducks, and then slid into the water.

The woman’s husband left the house for errands and came back finding his wife in the water.

She was pulled out of the pond and taken to Indian River Medical Center, Flowers said. The woman died just before noon.

Detectives are still investigating the scene.
