INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 36-year-old Miami man was arrested early Oct. 26 after deputies clocked him driving 107 mph on Interstate 95 while under the influence, according to an Indian River County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.
Deputies stopped Wilmer Antonio Duarte Lopez about 3 miles south of the State Road 60 exit just after midnight. A deputy positioned in the median observed him traveling northbound at a high speed, the report states.
Once detained, deputies noted the smell of alcohol on Duarte Lopez’s breath and described his eyes as watery, glassy, and bloodshot. He told officers he was heading from Miami to Jacksonville to pick someone up and had been speeding because he was in a hurry. According to the report, he admitted drinking two beers before leaving Miami.
Officers administered field sobriety exercises, followed by breath tests that registered 0.134 and 0.133. Florida’s legal limit is 0.08. A records check showed his driver’s license had been suspended since Aug. 10, the report said.
Duarte Lopez was booked into the Indian River County Jail on charges of dangerous excessive speeding (100 mph or more), driving under the influence with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 or higher, and driving while license suspended or revoked. Bond was set at $5,000 on each count, for a total of $15,000. According to jail records, he remained in custody as of Oct. 30.
