VERO BEACH – In honor of National Pet Month, the Senior Resource Association (SRA) teamed up with Danica David of Classy Kuts Dog Salon to launch a Pet Meals on Wheels Food and Supply Drive, rallying the community to support the pets of local seniors.
The initiative aimed to ensure that seniors enrolled in the Meals on Wheels program can care for their beloved companions without financial strain.
“As a pet professional, I witness the incredible bond between pets and their owners every day,” Danica David, a local pet professional who spearheaded the effort, said. “My goal with this drive was to help ensure that seniors in our community can keep their pets well fed and happy and never have to face the heartbreaking choice between feeding themselves or feeding their pets.”
The response from the Vero Beach community was overwhelming. Generous donors contributed over 1,300 cans and packs of wet pet food, more than 240 pounds of cat litter, 180 pet feeding dishes, and numerous flea collars, standard pet collars, treats, and other supplies. These donations will directly benefit the pets of Meals on Wheels clients, ensuring they remain healthy, happy, and by their owners’ sides, providing essential companionship.
“Many of our seniors see their pets as family,” said Karen Deigl, SRA President and CEO. “Thanks to the community’s kindness, we can help these beloved companions continue to thrive.”
The success was bolstered by the support of many local businesses and organizations that acted as donation collection sites. These included Bark Avenue Healthy Pets, Classy Kuts Dog Salon (both Vero Beach and Sebastian locations), Dog Days of Vero Beach, Goldstar Puppy Academy, Indian River County Chamber of Commerce, Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, Leisure Square Facility, Marine Bank, Minuteman Press, Planet Pet Animal Hospital, Precision Kuts Pet Grooming, South Paw Canine Country Club, The Willow School, Toyota/Kia of Vero Beach, Treasure Coast Animal Rehab, Treasure Coast Homeless Services Council, and Trillium Vero Beach.
The Meals on Wheels program at the Senior Resource Association (SRA) in Indian River County, Florida, delivers hot, nutritious meals to homebound seniors aged 60 and older five days a week to support their health, independence, and well-being.
The program addresses the needs among seniors who face challenges such as limited income, lack of transportation, physical limitations, or difficulty preparing meals. Volunteers provide not only meals but also daily wellness checks and social interaction, which are often the only contact some seniors have.
