SEBASTIAN — Rain and thunderstorms moved through Sebastian on Monday morning, with more showers expected through the day as a Flood Watch remained in effect for Indian River County.
The National Weather Service in Melbourne said scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms are likely, with periods of heavy rainfall possible. Highs should reach the upper 70s to around 80 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. East winds of 15 to 20 mph are forecast, with gusts of 25 to 40 mph.
Morning observations near Sebastian Municipal Airport showed thunderstorms and heavy rain, temperatures in the low to mid-70s, and humidity near 100 percent. Visibility dropped in the heaviest downpours.
A Flood Watch is in effect until 7 p.m. Monday. Forecasters said the ground is nearly saturated from recent heavy rains — some areas saw 3 to 7 inches over the weekend — raising the risk of localized flooding in poor drainage areas and on some roadways.
Indian River County officials advised residents not to drive through flooded streets, to allow extra travel time, and to secure loose outdoor items. The county also closed its customer convenience centers Monday because of overnight rain-related flooding.
Beach conditions remain hazardous. A High Surf Advisory is in effect until 7 p.m., with 4- to 7-foot waves expected along the Treasure Coast. A High Rip Current Risk remains in place through late Tuesday night for coastal portions of Indian River and neighboring counties. Officials urged people to stay out of the water.
Overnight, showers are likely to continue, with lows in the mid-70s. Conditions should gradually improve midweek, with more sunshine possible by Thursday and highs returning to the low 80s.
Residents can monitor updates from the National Weather Service Melbourne and Indian River County Emergency Services.
