Dunkin’ Donuts, Subway, and Vargas Mexican did well during their recent health inspections. Captain Hirams leads with most violations, but they significantly improved since their previous inspection.

It seems the busier a restaurant is, the more violations. There were no restaurant shutdowns by the state health inspector. One of the main reasons for conducting restaurant inspections is to educate staff and management on food safety and to make sure they comply.

Overall, restaurants in Sebastian have the least violations to any city of its size in Florida.

Vargas Mexican

Vargas Mexican, located at 8802 N. U.S. Highway 1, had 9 violations. 3 were a high priority for not keeping the minimum strength of the sanitizer for dishwashing and a problem with their to-go bags. All violations were corrected while the health inspector was present.

The other items were basic and included things like a bad bathroom door, a gap in an exterior door, a walk-in cooler that had food debris on the floor, and dust on food shelves.

Subway in Sebastian

Subway, located at 9609 U.S. Highway 1 in Sebastian, had 6 violations, and no high priority. All violations were corrected while the health inspector was present.

Some basic violations include a missing ceiling tile in a restroom, a damaged wall, and no paper towels near a handwashing sink.

Captain Hirams Resort (Black Fins)

The Captain Hirams Resort, located 1606 Indian River Drive in Sebastian, had 14 violations, 2 were high priority for storing fresh fish over cooked vegetables in a cooler, and a vacuum breaker was missing at hose bibb. All violations were corrected while the health inspector was present.

The other violations were basic, involving a damaged wall, no handwashing sign provided at a sink, a bad shelf rack, water in the bottom of a reach-in cooler, food storage containers not identified by common name, no paper towels near a handwashing sink, and water temperature below 100 degrees. Captain Hirams did improve from its previous inspection.

Dunkin Donuts

The Dunkin Donuts, located at 900 U.S. Highway 1 in Sebastian, had 3 violations, and no high-priority. All violations were corrected while the health inspector was at the restaurant.

Some basic violations include a damaged wall, an ice scoop handle in contact with ice, and a damaged door to a walk-in cooler.
