VERO BEACH – Indian River County Fire Rescue officials say a Vero Beach teen surfing near South Beach Park was transported to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute Sunday after the boy was bitten by a shark.

The teen suffered a puncture wound to the wrist and needed surgery. He is expected to make a full recovery.

A spokesperson for the Vero Beach Lifeguard Association says the boy was surfing with a group of friends just south of the park where an artificial reef contains bait fish for sharks.

Lt. Eric Flowers, Indian River County Sheriff’s Office spokesman, said the teen was picked up at Shorelands Drive East and State Road A1A before taken to the hospital.
