With Cinco de Mayo just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to whip up some guacamole and maybe even plant your own avocado tree!
Florida avocados are stealing the spotlight with their fresh, tropical flavor, making them a must-have for your fiesta recipes. Unlike the popular Hass avocado, Florida avocados have less fat, so you can enjoy your guac guilt-free. Plus, they pack a serious nutritional punch, with 60% more potassium than bananas.
Avocado trees have been growing in Florida since 1833, and today, the state is the second-largest avocado producer in the U.S. Thanks to researchers at the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), farmers keep these trees thriving, bringing fresh avocados to markets and backyards across the state.
Want to grow your own avocado tree? UF/IFAS expert Jeff Wasielewski, a tropical fruit agent in Miami-Dade County, shares the science behind successful avocado growing at home. His tips make it easy for Floridians to enjoy homegrown fruit.
