History of Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo marks Mexico’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The holiday is not Mexico’s Independence Day, which is Sept. 16.
It honors a key moment in which Mexican troops, led by Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza, defeated a larger, better-equipped French army. The win came during a French attempt to conquer Mexico.
Mexico was struggling with debt after the civil war and France invaded to gain control. The unexpected triumph at Puebla lifted Mexican spirits, though the French later occupied Mexico City.
In Mexico, especially in Puebla, the day is marked by parades and reenactments. In the U.S., it celebrates Mexican American culture with music, dancing and food.
