VERO BEACH — City of Vero Beach lifeguards received the Life Saving Award of Valor from Indian River County Fire Rescue (IRCFR) for their swift response to a rescue at South Beach on March 30, 2026.
The six lifeguards — Shayne Roycroft, Travis Matschner, Anthony Hernandez, Tommy Nichelson, Matt Brownlee, and Shaun Dibble — were recognized for their quick thinking, coordinated teamwork, and professionalism during the incident, according to Indian River County Fire Rescue.
Their actions helped save a life at a critical moment by demonstrating an unwavering commitment to public safety along our Treasure Coast beaches.
The Life Saving Award of Valor features the lifeguards’ dedication to protecting residents and visitors who frequent the area’s shores, where seconds often determine outcomes in emergencies.
