VERO BEACH — The Treasure Coast Girls Coalition (TCGC) has received a significant boost to its mission of empowering young women, securing a $10,000 grant from the United Way of Indian River County.
The funding will support TCGC’s year-round programming focused on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), digital literacy, and emotional intelligence for girls ages 9 to 18, particularly those from ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families in underserved communities.
In Indian River County, where over 53% of students are classified as economically disadvantaged, according to the Florida Department of Education, and access to enrichment programs is often limited. Communities like Gifford and Fellsmere face challenges, with generational poverty and scarce resources.
TCGC’s girl-centered, culturally relevant programs aim to bridge this gap through after-school and summer initiatives that emphasize STEAM education, career exploration, leadership development, and emotional wellness.
“This grant is more than financial support; it’s a testament to the power of community-driven solutions,” said Shala Edwards, TCGC’s Visionary Founder and Executive Director. Edwards explained that the United Way’s grant will help TCGC give the girls they work with the support, skills, and guidance they need to do well and succeed.
Historically, United Way’s presence in North County has been limited, making this partnership a pivotal step toward addressing geographic and social inequities. The partnership shows that both groups are dedicated to creating fair opportunities for young people in areas that need more support.
We believe that when you educate and elevate a girl, you uplift a whole community,” Edwards added. “We are deeply honored to begin this partnership with United Way IRC, and we look forward to a shared commitment to impact, transparency, and bold outcomes for our youth.”
TCGC’s programs are designed to equip girls with the tools to navigate and excel in a rapidly changing world, fostering confidence and resilience. For more information on how to support their mission, visit girlscoalition.org or follow @treasurecoastgirls on social media.
