In a surprising turn of events, Sebastian City Council member Kelly Dixon announced her resignation during last night’s council meeting, citing personal reasons for her decision to step down effective immediately.
“Tonight is my last meeting as a member of the City Council. Due to a myriad of personal reasons, I have decided to step down effective immediately. I will forever be grateful for your trust, enthusiastic acceptance, and the opportunity to serve this town I love these past two and a half years,” Dixon said.
Dixon, who was first elected in 2022 and re-elected on November 5, 2024, emphasized her commitment to representing the families of Sebastian.
“I have passionately served this community with the purpose of being the voice for the many families who call our paradise in Sebastian their home,” she said.
During her tenure, Dixon focused on ensuring the council and City Hall understood the town’s changing demographics through leadership, staff engagement, and community outreach.
“We have more programming and opportunities for children and families, and I’m so grateful. This mission is not done, but sadly my time up here on this dais is,” she added.
Mayor Bob McPartlan expressed the council’s sentiment, telling Sebastian Daily, “She will be hard to replace.”
A resident of Sebastian since 1997, Dixon has deep roots in the community. A graduate of Sebastian River High School, where she ranked in the top 10% of her class in 2001, Dixon went on to earn a degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Central Florida. There, she was part of the LEAD Scholars program and a Charter Member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, later serving as a Chapter Advisor.
She also holds a Master’s Degree and has built a career as a TV news reporter. Currently, she teaches TV Production, Film, and Photography at Indian River Charter High School.
Dixon’s community involvement extends beyond the council chambers. She has started a Girl Scout Troop, served on the PTA board at Treasure Coast Elementary, coached youth sports, and volunteered with organizations such as Toys for Tots and a Food Pantry.
Her election platform centered on preserving Sebastian’s natural beauty, particularly the Indian River Lagoon, promoting smart growth, and fostering stronger community ties between young families and retirees.
Dixon, 42, succeeded former Mayor Jim Hill, who retired after serving for over 20 years, and her departure leaves big shoes to fill.
What Happens Next?
With Dixon’s resignation, the Sebastian City Council must decide how to fill the vacancy. According to the city’s charter, the council has two options: they may either allow the vacancy to be filled during the upcoming citywide election, scheduled within the next six months or appoint a replacement to serve in the interim.
The council is expected to discuss and decide on the next steps at their upcoming meeting on Monday, June 9, 2025, at 6:00 pm.
