The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 189 is set to honor local veterans by replacing flags and adding markers at their gravesites this weekend as part of its Operation: Remember Our Heroes.
The initiative aims to identify and memorialize veterans’ graves with bronze military markers and American flags. Volunteers visit Brookside, Winter Beach, and Sebastian cemeteries twice a year — on Veterans Day and Memorial Day — to replace worn flags or place markers on unmarked military sites.
Since October 2014, the squadron has distributed more than 10,000 flags across the cemeteries.
“Our SAL Squadron believes that it is not too much to offer these brave men and women who fought, and in some cases, died for our freedom,” the group said in a statement.
Community members of all ages are invited to join. Service animals are welcome, but pets should be left at home.
The re-flagging events are scheduled for:
- Saturday, Nov. 1, at Winter Beach Cemetery, starting at 9:30 a.m.
- Sunday, Nov. 2, at Sebastian Cemetery, starting at 9:30 a.m.
