SEBASTIAN — The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 56 will sponsor a Boating Safety Training class on Saturday, May 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at American Legion Post 189, 807 Louisiana Avenue, in Sebastian, Florida.
The course, titled “Boat America – a course in responsible boating,” is open to the public and covers everything from basic boat knowledge to emergency response. Participants will learn “Know your boat” — parts of the boat and terminology. “Before you get underway” sessions address know before you go, float plans, fueling, trailering, launching and retrieving.
“Navigating the waterways” will include navigation rules, night navigation and lights, navigation aids, anchoring, locks and dams. “Operating your vessel safely” covers loading, trimming, handling, steering, docking, casting off, anchoring, PWC operations, environmental concerns and courtesy on the water.
Other topics include legal requirements — ages to operate, registration, safety and state laws — plus “Boating Emergencies, What to do,” which focuses on risk management, boating accidents, personal injuries, weather emergencies, getting help and helping others.
The class costs $35 per person, with $15 for each additional family member. Youth under 18 attend free.
Individuals who successfully complete the class and pass the exam are awarded certificates and will receive a Florida State Boater’s ID card.
