On Aug. 6, TCPalm published a draft story that laid out two possible outcomes for the Indian River County School Board District 2 primary race — 11 days before voters go to the polls.
A reporter meant to hit save on the draft. Instead, they clicked publish. The story went live with a generic placeholder headline, a secondary headline that named the candidates, and two versions of the race result stuck together—one declaring Candidate A the winner and the other declaring Candidate B the winner. Some general background on the race was included too.
Editors pulled the story as soon as the mistake was found.
TCPalm Executive Editor Adam Neal said the newsroom has launched a full review of its publishing workflow and is adding safeguards. “We regret the error and any confusion it caused,” Neal said in a statement.
Pre-writes are common at many news organizations. Reporters often draft multiple versions of election stories in advance so results can be posted quickly once the votes are counted. The problem here was not the existence of the pre-write. The problem was that it left the building.
At Sebastian Daily, our newsroom does not use pre-writes and does not consider them standard practice. We report the news as it happens.
Election coverage carries a higher duty of care than most other reporting. School board races in particular affect classroom decisions, budgets and local accountability. Publishing even placeholder outcomes before a single vote is cast risks confusing readers and feeding the perception that results have been predetermined. That perception is corrosive, whether or not it is true.
TCPalm corrected the error quickly and owned it publicly. That is the minimum response required. The larger question is whether the internal checks that should have stopped a draft from going live were adequate. A single misclick should not be enough to put unfinished election coverage in front of the public.
The primary is Aug. 18. Voters in District 2 still have time to examine the candidates on their own terms. News organizations covering the race have an obligation to make that examination easier, not harder.
