SEBASTIAN — Sebastian River High School football coaches have named seniors Matthew Williams and Brandon Villegas-Hamilton the program’s weekly spotlight players: a defensive lineman who worked his way back from a serious accident and a linebacker-safety now healthy enough to play wherever the Sharks need him.
Matthew Williams #72
Matthew Williams, a 6-foot, 210-pound senior, plays defensive end and nose guard. This is his fourth year with the Sharks. He plans to attend college after graduation to earn a business degree.
He said the coaches have been a constant.
“My coaches mean a lot to me because they push me to be better on and off the football field,” Williams told Sebastian Daily.
The game has left him with a simpler lesson.
“Sometimes you have to make mistakes so you can learn from them and overcome them,” he added.
Williams said he wanted to thank Head Coach Tyrone Perry for always being there when he needs him most.
He saved a separate word for home.
“I want to thank my mom because she has been with me through this long journey,” Williams said.
Coach Perry said Williams has given the program everything over four seasons, including the work it took to get back on the field.
“Matt has given our program everything over the past four years. After surviving a severe accident caused by a drunk driver, he dedicated himself to rehab and fought his way back onto the field for his final season—making this year extra special.”
Perry said the senior’s value shows up at defensive tackle.
“At defensive tackle, Matt combines a strong frame with elite get-off. He explodes off the snap to keep offensive tackles on their heels, using a blend of bull rushes and rip-and-dip moves to turn the corner and disrupt the quarterback. A high-energy player across all four quarters, Matt never stops chasing down plays from behind. In his senior year, we expect him to embrace a major leadership role and guide our defensive line.”
Defensive Coordinator Chris Jefferson said the same traits show up in the daily work.
“Matthew Williams has been a dedicated football player of mine for the past few years. He’s a hard-working young man with a great attitude who has shown tremendous perseverance in overcoming adversity. On the defensive line, Matthew understands the importance of doing the tough work, getting off the ball, using his hands, maintaining gap integrity, and pursuing the football. He’s continued to improve his technique and become a more disciplined player. I’m proud of the growth and determination he’s shown, both as a football player and as a young man.”
Brandon Villegas-Hamilton #16
Brandon Villegas-Hamilton is a 5-foot-11, 170-pound outside linebacker and safety who has played with the Sharks for three years. After graduation, he plans to attend trade school for HVAC so he can one day own his own company.
Villegas-Hamilton said the coaching staff has stayed on him since he entered the program.
“My coaches have always pushed me to be the best version of myself. They’ve taught me to work hard, stay disciplined, and keep going no matter what. I’m thankful for everything they’ve done for me and for the impact they’ve had on my football career,” he told Sebastian Daily.
The game, he said, left him with a few rules he intends to keep.
“Football has taught me to stay humble, work hard, and keep going when things get tough. It’s taught me that every setback is a chance to grow,” said Villegas-Hamilton.
He saved the last word for home.
“I want to thank all my family for always supporting me throughout my football journey. Your sacrifices, encouragement, and belief in me have helped me become the player and person I am today. I’m truly grateful for all of you,” Villegas-Hamilton stated.
Head Coach Tyrone Perry said the senior is healthy and ready for more snaps in his final season.
“Over four years in our program, Brandon has given us every ounce of effort. Now fully healthy, he is poised to be a key contributor for us on special teams, outside linebacker, and safety.”
Perry said the senior’s value starts with how he treats the room.
“What makes Brandon unique starts with his character—he is an unselfish, great teammate who constantly lifts the players around him. On top of that, his football IQ is outstanding. Wherever we put him on the field, Brandon understands his role and adapts seamlessly.”
The expectation for 2026 is straightforward.
“In his final season, we expect Brandon to build on that foundation and provide valuable minutes on the field alongside his powerful leadership.”
Outside linebackers coach Brad Butler said the same work shows up day after day.
“Brandon is a great, hardworking young man who is always willing to help wherever he is needed. He always gives great effort and has a winning attitude. It’s been great having him around the program these last 3 years.”
Assistant coach Will Franklin pointed to the way Villegas-Hamilton carries the locker room.
“Brandon Villegas is a great kid! He has always been a positive and great teammate. When things are down, he always tries to keep the team up!”
Franklin said that attitude is what the staff notices first.
“His attitude has always been a blessing for coaches,” Franklin stated.
