SEBASTIAN — Two Sebastian police officers have been placed on paid administrative leave after a fatal shooting Thursday night, Interim Police Chief Timothy Wood said.
The officers responded about 9:30 p.m. Sept. 17 to a noise complaint of someone yelling inside a home in the 500 block of Joy Haven Drive, Wood said Friday at a news conference at the Sebastian Police Department.
They arrived and spoke with a woman who lives at the home. While they were talking with her, a man walked out of the house holding a shotgun.
About 9:33 p.m., the man, identified as 41-year-old Keaton Daucher of Sebastian, came out of the home with a shotgun. The two officers fired their service weapons, Wood said.
Officers then began life-saving measures on the man, Wood said. He said he did not know whether shots were fired at the officers.
Daucher was pronounced dead at the scene. The officers were not injured, and there was no threat to the public, Wood said.
Both officers involved in the shooting were placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which Wood said is standard practice.
“This is a very difficult situation,” Wood said. “This is a very difficult time for both sides.”
Wood declined to release further details, saying the case remained under investigation and had been turned over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Sebastian police officials, with help from the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, remained on the scene Friday morning.
