A Publix employee was arrested and charged with theft after allegedly stealing $800 from the cash register at the Sebastian store at 9621 US Highway 1.
According to a police affidavit, the incident occurred when a Publix Loss Prevention Officer was alerted to missing cash from one of the registers. $600 was reported missing on January 1st, and another $200 went missing on January 3rd. The officer reviewed the store’s security footage and observed the employee, Jasmine Desha Green, opening the register drawer, removing cash, and placing it in her pocket.
On January 23rd, the loss prevention officer confronted Green at the store, and she admitted to taking the $800. Publix officials confirmed their intent to pursue criminal charges.
The store then notified the Sebastian Police Department and they arrived on the scene and interviewed Green, who again confessed to the theft. She explained that she was a single mother of two young children and was struggling to provide for them. She cited financial difficulties, including the cost of childcare and transportation from her home in Fort Pierce to her job in Sebastian.
Green, 27, was arrested and transported to the Indian River County Jail. She was charged with grand theft and is currently being held on a $2,500 bond.
