VERO BEACH — A 25-year-old man was sentenced on Friday to 10 years in prison for a January 2024 shooting at a Vero Beach apartment complex and a high-speed chase with deputies, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office said.
Vandrell Jacobs was arrested on Jan. 29, 2024, a day after deputies responded to gunfire at Orangewood Apartments. Five bullets struck an apartment that was occupied by a family, according to the sheriff’s office.
Witnesses told investigators they saw people inside a red Mercedes firing toward an intended victim before the car sped away.
Flock license-plate cameras recorded the Mercedes in the area for about two minutes before the shooting. Video showed the car stopping, then leaving.
A deputy later spotted the Mercedes and tried to stop it. The driver fled at high speed and ran red lights, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies found the car the next day and arrested Jacobs.
He was charged with shooting into a dwelling and fleeing police with disregard for safety. Jacobs admitted the allegations when he was arrested, according to the sheriff’s office.
He began serving the 10-year prison term after Friday’s sentencing.
