Last week, the Sebastian Inlet Sail & Power Squadron (SISPS) cleaned up their adopted spoil islands known as 12, 13, and 14.
“The good news is that we only picked up about 30 pounds of stuff. The islands were pretty clean, thanks to most people picking up after themselves,” SISPS member Ron Ray said.
30 members of the group volunteered their time and helped with the cleanup. Afterward, the group had a small celebration.
“We celebrated with a picnic, hot dogs, and all the fixings. Great day for being on the water, Ray added.
Since November 2003, the Sebastian Inlet Sail & Power Squadron has been the local unit of the world’s largest non-profit boating organization, the United States Power Squadron.
They currently provide:
- Safe boating courses to the community
- Discounted boating education to the youth of our area through our grant program
- Courtesy Vessel Exams through our Vessel Safety Check Program
- Assist NOAA with the correction of charts through our Cooperative Charting Program.
The only requirements for membership are a keen interest in boating-related activities, an eagerness to meet like-minded people, and completing an approved boating course.
They have monthly membership meetings on the fourth (4th) Monday of each month, except for December. Meetings are suspended during June, July, and August.
