JetBlue ending Vero Beach-JFK flights Sept. 9, citing low demand

VERO BEACH — JetBlue will stop flying between Vero Beach Regional Airport and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport after Sept. 9, the airline and airport officials confirmed.

The nonstop route, which began in December, is being dropped because of weaker-than-expected passenger numbers, according to interim Airport Director Brandon Dambeck. He said the airline was not seeing the ridership it had hoped for and that carriers routinely adjust routes based on demand.

JetBlue’s daily flights between Vero Beach and Boston Logan International Airport are not affected and will continue. Dambeck said that service is performing with great demand.

The airline has not announced any replacement routes from Vero Beach. Dambeck noted that JetBlue regularly reviews its network and could reconsider the New York service later.

Passengers holding tickets on the discontinued flights will be contacted directly by JetBlue and will receive full refunds. The airline is also offering rebooking options on other flights.

Some regular travelers who use the Vero Beach JetBlue service to New York have expressed disappointment. Many believe the route simply needed more time and said a lot of people never knew the JFK flights existed.

JetBlue launched the Vero Beach service last winter amid local optimism that the small airport would gain more convenient Northeast connections. The Boston route remains the only JetBlue service from Vero Beach after Sept. 9.
