TAMPA — Florida will permit the sale of lower-cost winter-blend gasoline starting May 1 in a bid to ease high fuel prices for drivers. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) issued the emergency order allowing the sale of winter-blend E-15 gasoline starting May 1 for 90 days.
Officials are hoping the move will bring some relief as average gas prices hover near $4 a gallon.
Winter-blend fuel typically costs 5 to 15 cents less per gallon because it is cheaper to produce than standard summer gasoline. However, the blend comes with important caveats for vehicle performance and air quality.
AAA warns that E-15 is not suitable for all cars. Only vehicles from model year 2001 and newer are designed to run safely on it, according to AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins.
Drivers of older vehicles risk engine trouble or reduced efficiency if they use the blend. Experts recommend checking the owner’s manual before filling up.
Some residents express concern about the environmental impact even as they welcome potential savings at the pump.
Stations statewide may begin offering the winter-blend fuel on May 1 and continue through late July. Drivers should weigh the savings against possible effects on mileage and vehicle compatibility.
