PORT ST. LUCIE — Amazon will shut down operations at its Port St. Lucie fulfillment center later this year, laying off nearly 500 employees as the company prepares a major renovation and expansion of the warehouse.
The company filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice with the state and the city of Port St. Lucie. According to the notice, the layoffs will begin Sept. 17 and continue through Dec. 17.
The 1-million-square-foot warehouse, located at 7600 LTC Parkway, will close for a renovation and expansion project expected to take about two years.
Amazon has described the work as a $200 million investment that will convert the site into an upgraded fulfillment center. The company has said the facility is expected to reopen in 2028 and employ roughly 1,000 people once renovations are complete.
Earlier reports indicated the warehouse employed about 850 people. The WARN notice covers 494 workers.
Amazon has previously said affected employees may be eligible for transfers to other company facilities in the area if positions are available. Workers who remain employed until their final day are typically offered severance and extended health benefits, though the company has not publicly detailed the package tied to this specific notice.
The temporary closure is part of a broader review of Amazon’s network of warehouses. A similar renovation is underway at another Florida facility in Homestead.
Local economic development officials have said they are working with workforce agencies to help affected employees find new jobs during the shutdown.
