SEBASTIAN — Two years after acquiring hospitals and physician practices in Brevard and Indian River counties, Orlando Health says it has expanded specialized services, upgraded technology and facilities, and continues planning major long-term investments in the region.
The organization acquired the former Melbourne and Sebastian River hospitals in 2024 as part of its expansion onto Florida’s East Coast. Since then, it has focused on clinical programs, equipment, and access points while outlining broader growth, including a planned new hospital in Viera.
“The past two years have been about more than investing dollars into buildings and equipment,” Ohme Entin, president of Orlando Health’s East Region, said in a statement. “They have been about building a stronger healthcare system for this community, expanding access, delivering exceptional care, and earning the trust of the patients and families we are privileged to serve.”
Entin added that upcoming work will include expanded services, advanced treatments and facility enhancements.
In the past year alone, Orlando Health reported $14.7 million in spending on technology, equipment and facility work across the two counties. The list includes a new cardiac catheterization lab at Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital, patient monitoring upgrades, inpatient bed renovations, and new or replacement equipment for orthopedic, laboratory, ultrasound, GI and operating-room areas at both the Melbourne and Sebastian River hospitals.
Other projects cited include parking lot work, a mobile imaging van for cardiology clinics, lobby improvements at the Melbourne hospital, and infrastructure renovations such as elevators, generators and water heaters at both facilities.
An additional roughly $13.5 million in projects is underway or planned for 2026-2027, according to the organization. Those include major renovations at Orlando Health Sebastian River Hospital covering the roof and emergency department, upgrades to public areas such as lounges, lobbies, waiting rooms and restrooms there, new imaging equipment at the Melbourne hospital, and renovations at the physician clinic in the Melbourne medical office building.
Orlando Health has also stated a longer-term pledge to invest more than $750 million in the region over coming years. That figure includes the Viera hospital project along with more physician access points and primary care services.
“Healthcare is constantly evolving, and our investments in technology, equipment and clinical capabilities are helping us deliver safer, more efficient and higher-quality care,” said Dr. Michael McLaughlin, chief medical officer for the Orlando Health East Region. “From advanced diagnostic tools to expanded patient care areas, these improvements directly support our physicians, clinical teams and, most importantly, the patients who entrust us with their care. I truly believe our quality of care at Orlando Health Melbourne Hospital and Orlando Health Sebastian River Hospital is stronger than ever.”
Orlando Health is a private not-for-profit integrated academic health system based in Orlando. It reports $15 billion in assets under management and operates hospitals, physician practices, urgent care centers and other services in Florida, Alabama and Puerto Rico. The system said it provided nearly $2 billion in community benefit programs, Medicare shortfalls, bad debt, community-building activities and capital investments in fiscal year 2024, the most recent period for which figures were available.
