SEBASTIAN — Sebastian River High School moves its annual PRISM concert to Nov. 19-22 this year so the band can travel to Hawaii in December for the 85th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The five shows will be held at the school’s Performing Arts Center, 9001 Shark Blvd.
PRISM has been a fixture on the school calendar for more than 30 years. Unlike a standard concert, the program runs without a break. Students move through the auditorium in concert bands, choirs, percussion, color guard, chamber groups, dance features, and solos, so the music comes from more than the stage.
The name comes from that mix. School officials say the concert is meant to work like a prism splitting light, bringing the range of the music program into one show. It will include holiday music, classical pieces, newer works, and student features. For many families in Indian River County, it marks the start of the holiday season.
Show times: This year’s dates are earlier than usual!
- 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19
- 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20

Members of the Pride of Sebastian River are scheduled to go to Oahu in December for events tied to the Dec. 7, 1941, attack. The band department said students will take part in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade in Waikiki and perform at the USS Missouri. Moving PRISM into November keeps the local shows on the calendar and gives the students time to prepare for the trip.
For many of them, it will be the farthest they have traveled to perform. Band officials described the trip as a chance to tie what students do in rehearsal to the history of Pearl Harbor, and said community support through the year helped make it possible.
The concert also follows the fall marching season. Director of Bands Brandon T. Jenkins and Associate Director of Bands Ashley Sherwood Catrett lead the program. This year’s marching show, “Pride,” uses music by Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino.
PRISM is where audiences see the rest of the department: concert bands, choir, percussion, color guard, chamber ensembles, and soloists.
