INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 20-year-old Palm Bay man was arrested early Monday after a deputy stopped a black Dodge sedan near Americana and 90th Avenue in Vero Beach. Deputies recovered a loaded pistol, marijuana, and a device an ATF task force officer identified as a Glock switch, according to an Indian River County Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit.
Rehki Jyquan Hughes was charged with felony possession of a bump stock and misdemeanor possession of marijuana, according to the affidavit.
The stop happened shortly after midnight Sept. 21. The deputy reported the sedan had no visible tag lights and heavily tinted windows. After Hughes lowered the window, the deputy said he smelled fresh and burnt marijuana. Hughes told the deputy he had smoked a few hours earlier, the report said.
Deputies said they could see what looked like marijuana packaging and a stem inside the car. Hughes showed a photo of an expired medical marijuana card. Dispatch later told deputies he was listed on the medical marijuana registry but did not have an active order allowing him to possess marijuana.
Hughes got out of the car and kept reaching toward his pocket after being told not to, the affidavit said. A metal device then fell from the pocket.
An ATF task force officer who came to the scene identified the item as a machine gun conversion device, commonly called a Glock switch. The report said the device can change a firearm so it is capable of automatic fire. Under Florida law, an unattached device of that kind is classified as a bump stock, deputies said.
A search of the car turned up a loaded FN 5.7 pistol with one round in the chamber and 19 rounds in the magazine, found in a bag Hughes had been reaching toward, according to the affidavit. Deputies also reported multiple bags of marijuana, a marijuana nugget and two marijuana cigarette ends.
Hughes denied knowing about the gun or the conversion device. He said the marijuana was his.
The pistol, ammunition, device, and suspected marijuana were placed into evidence, the sheriff’s office said. He posted a $10,500 bond and was released on the same day.
