INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Sheriff’s Office warns residents about a phone scam in which callers are posing as deputies.
The callers tell people they have a warrant for their arrest or another legal matter and demand credit card information, gift cards or other payments to resolve it, according to the alert issued by the office.
Law enforcement will never call you requesting money, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The office is asking residents to share the warning with friends, neighbors and loved ones so no one falls for the scam.
Anyone who receives a call like this should hang up immediately. To verify whether a call is legitimate, contact the Sheriff’s Office directly using a known official number rather than any number provided by the caller.
