Zach Stambaugh, a 23-year-old Sebastian resident with Autism Spectrum Disorder, has qualified for the prestigious Boston Marathon, set to take place in April 2025.
Stambaugh’s accomplishment is the culmination of years of dedication to running, a passion he discovered during his time at Sebastian River High School (SRHS).
“I love running because it makes me happy,” Stambaugh told Sebastian Daily. “Running also makes me feel good and relaxes me. I love being a part of the running community because I meet new people who inspire me.”
He credits SRHS coaches Tyrone Perry and Marianne Day with helping him develop his running skills and endurance. Since then, he has competed in over one hundred races, traveling with his parents and coaches to various events.
Stambaugh’s progress has been supported by groups like the Doug Flutie Foundation, which supports people and families living with autism. “I’m so thankful the Doug Flutie Foundation has faith in me and helps me out,” he explained. They’ve been a huge help in organizing races and making it possible for him to reach his goals.
Currently enrolled in the Project Stage culinary program at Indian River State College, Stambaugh balances his studies, a job at Publix, and his rigorous training schedule. His hobbies include competitive fishing with his father, participating in Special Olympics, and teaching Sunday School at Crossroads Christian Fellowship. He also designs and sells t-shirts featuring his quotes and designs through an online store managed by Southern T’s in Sebastian.
To qualify for the Boston Marathon, runners must complete a certified marathon within a specific time limit for their age group. The “cut-off” time for the 2025 race was 6 hours and 51 seconds. Stambaugh recently completed the challenging Dopey Races at Disney, which consists of a 5K, 10K, half marathon, and full marathon over four consecutive days. He expressed gratitude to Rob and Lynn Maddaloni for their support during training.
Stambaugh’s motto, “Just B U,” reflects his positive and determined spirit. He is excited to represent his community at the Boston Marathon and inspire others to pursue their dreams. His official Boston Marathon shirt will soon be available through his online store at Southern T’s.
Sebastian Daily is one of the sponsors for Stambaugh to run in the Boston Marathon.
