SEBASTIAN — Five candidates seeking two seats on the Sebastian City Council will participate Friday (Oct. 2nd) at a free public forum in the Tiffany Room at Capt. Hiram’s.
The forum runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at 1606 Indian River Drive. Doors open at 5 p.m. Admission is free. Questions will be asked by a moderator. The event will also be streamed live on Sebastian Daily’s Facebook page.
The event is presented by the Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce, the Taxpayers Association of Indian River County and Sebastian Daily. Organizers said all candidates have been invited.
Two at-large, nonpartisan seats are on the Nov. 3 ballot. Each carries a two-year term. The seats are now held by Council members Ed Dodd and Sherrie Matthews. Matthews is seeking reelection. Dodd is not on the ballot.
The candidates are Robert Gable, Damien Gilliams, Richard Gillmor, Sherrie Matthews and Deborah Shellenberger.
Voters who live inside city limits will choose two of the five. After the election, the newly seated five-member council selects the mayor and vice mayor from among its members.
Growth, annexation, the Indian River Lagoon and the city’s working waterfront have been among the issues before the council this year. Those topics are expected to surface again Friday as residents size up the field with a little more than a month until Election Day.
Gold sponsor for the forum is Orlando Health. Silver sponsor is iTHINK Financial. Bronze sponsor is Robin Raiff at The Keyes Company.
No reservation is required, but seating is limited.
