Truck for FPL Contractor Catches Fire in Fellsmere

At approximately 11:30 a.m., the Fellsmere Police Department received a call about a truck on fire on Babcock Street in Fellsmere. 

“The driver saw flashing lights behind him from a motorist try to alert him of the fire,” Fellsmere Police Chief Keith Touchberry told Sebastian Daily.

The fire started near the truck’s rear brakes and quickly ignited in just a couple of minutes. The driver, identified as Joseph Perez De Prado, attempted to use a fire extinguisher to put out the blaze, but at that point, the fire was out of control.

The driver was on his way back to his office in Ft. Pierce.

The truck is called a Digger Derrick, which is specifically designed to dig holes for power poles. 

The driver didn’t sustain any injuries. The road is back open.
