A 60-year-old Sebastian man was killed Thursday morning after his vehicle crossed over into the opposite lane on U.S. Highway 1 and hit a tree, the Florida Highway Patrol told Sebastian Daily.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:35 a.m.

FHP Lieutenant Yanko Reyes said the vehicle was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 1 near 79th Street when the vehicle, for unknown reasons at this time, crossed into the southbound lanes against traffic before striking a tree on the shoulder. The vehicle caught on fire.

The driver was transported to Lawnwood Medical Center, where he succumbed to the injuries caused by the crash and was pronounced deceased.

The case is pending investigation.

The crash caused U.S. Highway 1 to shut down for several hours as traffic was redirected.
