Sebastian River High School’s football program is kicking off its Players of the Week series for the 2026-2027 school year, with two standout athletes, Davion Cypress and Michael Pappas. These two players were selected by their coaches for their on-field leadership, team-oriented mindsets, and strong work ethic.
Davion Cypress #64
Senior Davion Cypress, a 6-foot-7 offensive tackle for the Sharks, has played football since he was 8 years old and is working toward a college opportunity despite having no offers yet.
The coaching staff has shaped much of his development, especially Coach Perry, Coach Weatherly and Coach Green, whom he grew close to after his mother died and who have pushed him to keep improving.
One of his favorite memories is Coach Franklin joking with the group during individual drills, turning ordinary practice into something he still laughs about.
Away from the field, Cypress spends time wrestling, playing chess, and gaming. He points to his brothers, Dondre and Malquie Cypress, as role models, and gives credit to his sister, Jamarria Cypress, and his mother, Jacquita Cypress. His aim is straightforward: be the best at whatever he takes on and give full effort every time.
Coach Perry offered this assessment of senior offensive tackle Davion Cypress as the Sharks head into the 2026 season:
“Davion Cypress enters his fourth year in the program and second season as a starting offensive tackle. At 6’7″ with ideal length for pass protection, Davion possesses all the physical attributes to be an elite presence on our offensive line”, Coach Perry told Sebastian Daily.
“His frame allows him to neutralize top edge rushers, maintain leverage in pass protection, expand blocking lanes, and safeguard our quarterback’s blind side, making his role critical to our team’s success. As he takes full ownership of the position, we expect Davion to set the tone up front—using brute physical force to dominate the line of scrimmage and anchor our offense in 2026,” Perry added.
Cypress’s coaches say his value to the Sharks goes well beyond size and strength.
“You can always count on Cypress to bring positive energy wherever he goes. He is always trying to become better and finding ways to make his position group stronger, stated Coach Eli Green.
Coaches also highlight Cypress’s character and leadership while hoping he takes the next step in both football and wrestling this season.
“Cypress is a good person off the field and a strong leader on the field. We’re hoping he opens up, realizes his full potential, and dominates the line on the field and on the wrestling mat this year,” Coach Phin Weatherly told us.
Michael Pappas #11
Senior Michael Pappas, a 6-foot middle linebacker wearing No. 11 for the Sharks, has played football since seventh grade and holds a 3.8 GPA. He plans to attend Florida Atlantic University after graduation, though he has not settled on a major, and he currently has no college offers.
The coaching staff, especially Coach Perry, made a lasting impact after Pappas arrived in the program undersized and unsure whether he belonged.
One of his favorite memories came in the weight room when the whole team rallied around him during a bench-press personal record attempt and then celebrated the successful lift together.
When he’s not on the field, Pappas enjoys spending time in the gym, fishing, and hanging out with friends. He credits his parents for their steady support in football and life, and for making it a priority to be at his games despite full schedules.
Coach Perry offered this assessment of senior inside linebacker Michael Pappas as the Sharks prepare for the 2026 season:
“Michael Pappas enters his fourth year with the SRHS program and second season as a starting inside linebacker. The backbone—and meat and potatoes—of our defense, Pappas brings a rare combination of elite instincts, high-level processing speed, physical toughness, and sideline-to-sideline range,” Coach Perry told Sebastian Daily.
“He excels at setting pre-snap alignments, diagnosing complex blocking schemes instantly, and routinely anticipating plays before they unfold. Equally effective as a stout run-stopper and a reliable zone-coverage defender, we expect Michael to take that next step as an elite linebacker and key team leader for the 2026 season,” Perry added.
The 2026 varsity football schedule for the Sebastian River High School Sharks kicks off on September 4, 2026. All regular-season varsity games start at 7:00 PM.
