Navy JROTC cadets from Sebastian River High School added some excitement to Treasure Coast Elementary School students’ day recently as guest judges for the school science fair.
Cadets asked the younger students about their reasons for choosing particular topics, how they conducted their research, and assigned scores based on creativity, quality of research, and other criteria. The elementary schoolers loved the opportunity to interact with “big kids” and the cadets enjoyed mentoring the younger students.
“I loved seeing the kids light up when they talked about their favorite parts of the project. I enjoy seeing younger kids enjoy science as much as I do!” said Cadet Emily Place. The 3/4/5 do the project at home. K/1 do it in class. It’s gets the students exposure to the scientific method.
Amy Keliihananui, the TC Elementary Math Coach said, “The SRHS Navy JROTC Cadets were phenomenal. It was great to see the younger and older kids together. Our younger kids weren’t as intimidated by the older kids and really liked talking to them.
Brittany Timms, the staff sponsor for the TC Elementary Techy Pirates said, “The SRHS Navy JROTC Cadets were awesome! Their feedback and how they communicated to the kids was fantastic. You could tell the younger kids really responded to them and it made the event so much more meaningful.”
“TC Elementary is a STEAM school, so this is a really important event for Treasure Coast Elementary. The kids really get into the projects and get to experience how the scientific method works in real life!”
Patricia See, the TC Elementary Librarian said, “The kids were so excited about their science projects. They loved to talk about them to the “big kid” judges.”
