SEBASTIAN — Two Sebastian River High School defensive linemen say the same things pushed them through a second year in the program: daily work, coaches who stayed on them, and a plan for what comes after the last snap.
Djoula Augustin #99
Djoula Augustin, a defensive end, is listed at 6-foot-6 and 205 pounds. He carries a 3.3 grade-point average and has been with the Sharks for two years. He plans to go to college, keep playing, and study marketing. Football, he said, taught him not to quit when the work gets hard.
Djoula Augustin said his coaches have shaped more than his technique.
“The coaches mean a lot to me because they help me learn a lot about myself and football,” Augustin told Sebastian Daily.
Augustin asked to honor Heredia Narvis, who he said pushed him to do well in school and stay positive. He thanked Coach Perry and Coach Chris for football and life lessons, Mrs. Jordan for what she has done for him over the past two years, and his parents.
Coach Perry says, “He has given the program everything he has each day. At his size, Augustin uses his reach to keep offensive linemen off his chest and gets off the ball quickly enough to put tackles on their heels.” Perry described a mix of bull rushes, rips and dips that lets him turn the corner and pressure the quarterback, and said Augustin chases plays from behind with high energy through all four quarters. Heading into his final season, the staff wants him to take the next step and lead the defensive line.”
Defensive coordinator Chris Jefferson said the same traits show up in practice.
“Djoula is a hard-working, disciplined young man who comes ready to work every day,” Jefferson said. “He’s coachable, takes correction, and applies it. You never have to question his effort — he’s going to put his head down, do his job, and keep getting better.”
Jimmy Augustin #40
Jimmy Augustin is a nose guard in his second year with a 3.6 grade-point average. After high school, he wants to study to become a physical therapist. Football, he said, showed him that success takes hard work and discipline.
“The coaches have helped me reach my goals and pushed me to stay disciplined in what I am doing,” Augustin stated.
He wanted to honor Coach Perry, who helped him become a better version of himself on the field and in the weight room.
“Jimmy spent last season working through rehab to get back on the field. Strength built with the weightlifting team and added size have him ready to contribute on the front line, Coach Perry told Sebastian Daily. “As he keeps refining his work as a defensive tackle, his speed and power give him a chance to control opposing linemen. Healthy again, Perry said, he is in position to be a real piece of the defense this season,” Perry added.
