SEBASTIAN — Cadet Ensign Christina Bissonnette of Sebastian River High School’s Navy JROTC program has been named Cadet of the Month for January by the unit in partnership with the Indian River Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.
The honor recognizes Bissonnette’s outstanding performance and achievements from December 2025 through January 2026, such as her selection for a prestigious national scholarship.
Bissonnette, a cadet ensign, won the 2026 Commander, Naval Air Forces Private Pilot Scholarship Program, beating out more than 200 Navy and Marine Corps JROTC cadets from across the country. She was one of just 14 chosen for the award, which features her strong academics, dedication and ambition for growth.
This summer, Bissonnette will head to an eight-week intensive program combining college-level coursework and flight training. The scholarship covers all costs, including housing, meals, travel, classes and the flight hours needed for a private pilot’s license — a top-tier opportunity in the NJROTC ranks.
Beyond aviation, Bissonnette holds a 4.0 unweighted GPA and ranks ninth in her class of 416 seniors, displaying her discipline and ability to juggle demands.
Senior Naval Science Instructor Cmdr. Peter Bissonnette, a retired U.S. Navy officer, praised her efforts. “She is an amazing young lady and her perseverance and tenacity are inspiring,” he said. “We are proud to have her in SRHS NJROTC and I’m excited to see what she chooses to do with her life after high school.”
Bissonnette’s success views her as a exceptional example in the program, blending academics, resilience as well as a service mindset.
