INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River County School Board has opened a search for its next superintendent, with applications and a community survey open through Oct. 26.
The process follows Superintendent Dr. David K. Moore’s announcement that he will conclude his service effective June 30, 2027, after nearly seven years leading the district. Moore’s tenure ranks as the second longest among Florida’s appointed district school superintendents.
The district serves more than 14,000 students in Sebastian, Fellsmere, Ver Beach, and surrounding areas. It is the largest employer in Indian River County, with more than 1,800 instructional and support staff members.
Under Moore, the district rose from 38th to fifth among Florida’s 67 school districts by district grade, according to district figures. It has earned four consecutive A district grades from the Florida Department of Education. All district-operated schools now hold A or B ratings, with 23 of 24 traditional public schools earning an A. The district has also reported student achievement exceeding pre-pandemic levels in most areas, strong graduation outcomes and expanded educational choices. Moore was named the 2025 Florida Superintendent of the Year and a national finalist.
District officials said the next superintendent will need to understand the district’s people and operations, sustain effective practices, address weaknesses and innovate thoughtfully. Priorities include academic growth and literacy, leadership development, fiscal responsibility, strong community relationships and transparent communication. The district describes itself as “Connected by Community, Fueled by Innovation, and Driven by Leadership.”
A community survey opened Sept. 29, inviting students, families, employees, and community members to share what they believe matters most in the next leader. Survey responses and candidate materials will be provided to the School Board on Oct. 27.
Applications for the position also opened Sept. 29. Qualified candidates must submit a complete application and all required materials by 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, through the district’s Superintendent Search webpage.
Under the current timeline, the board will review qualifying candidates at a public workshop on Nov. 17 and determine who advances to interviews. Finalists are scheduled to tour district schools and the community on Dec. 13. On Dec. 14, they will participate in public interviews, individual interviews with board members, and presentations of their 90-day plans. The board is scheduled to select a preferred candidate during a special school board business meeting that evening, followed by contract negotiations.
The district has indicated a preference for experience in a Florida public school district. Related board discussions have listed the salary range as $225,000 to $255,000.
The district’s Superintendent Search webpage includes full details on the survey, qualifications, application instructions, and timeline. The district will post additional opportunities for public participation there.
Moore said he intends to explore opportunities to help other leaders and school systems after he departs. Board members have expressed interest in a transition period that would allow the incoming superintendent to work alongside him before June 30.
