VERO BEACH — The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County is partnering with the BISSELL Pet Foundation to host its annual Empty the Shelters adoption event, hoping to move dozens of dogs and cats into local homes by slashing or waiving fees.
The two-week campaign runs May 1-17 at the shelter, which is operating at full capacity. Officials said the timing could not be better.
“We at HSVB are excited to participate in Empty the Shelters,” said Nichola Redmond, the Humane Society’s chief of operations. “With our shelter being at full capacity, we are grateful to the BISSELL Pet Foundation for this opportunity and funding. We have so many adorable dogs and cats eager to find their fur-ever homes.”
The BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters is the country’s largest funded adoption event. Launched in 2016, the program encourages families to adopt rather than buy pets. More than 300,000 animals have found homes through the initiative, which now works with about 800 animal welfare organizations in 48 states and Canada to help cover adoption costs.
The Vero Beach event takes place at the shelter at 6230 77th St. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
