SEBASTIAN — Senior Resource Association runs the only adult day centers licensed in Indian River County, with sites in Vero Beach and Sebastian for adults who cannot safely stay home alone.
The program, called DayAway, serves people 18 and older who can bear their own weight and transfer with limited help. Participants generally handle personal needs but need supervision, company, or help with daily tasks. The centers also take adults with physical limitations, memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease, and other dementia.
DayAway is licensed by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration. Staff are licensed practical nurses and certified nursing assistants trained in Alzheimer’s and dementia care. The nurse‑to‑participant ratio is 1‑to‑5 in Sebastian and 1‑to‑6 in Vero Beach, according to Senior Resource Association.
Staff help with eating, walking, transfers, toileting, and incontinence care. Participants with memory loss are offered a bathroom break every two hours or as needed. Meals are plated and hot, and a registered dietitian approves them to cover one‑third of daily dietary needs.
A mix of exercise, dancing, arts and crafts, and other hands‑on activities is available throughout the week. Community Coach can provide prearranged rides. For eligibility questions about that service, call 772‑569‑0903.
The Vero Beach center, at 694 14th St., is open 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Sebastian center, at 815 Davis St., is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
To schedule a tour, call 772‑569‑0760, extension 113 in Vero Beach or extension 310 in Sebastian. Senior Resource Association’s main number is 772‑569‑0760.
