VERO BEACH — The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 56 will hold a full-day boating safety training course from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 15 at American Legion Post 39, 1535 Old Dixie Highway.
The class, based on the Boat America curriculum, covers boat parts and terminology; pre-departure preparations including float plans, fueling, trailering, launching and retrieving; navigation rules, night navigation and lights, aids to navigation, anchoring, locks and dams; safe vessel operation including loading, trimming, handling, steering, docking, casting off, personal watercraft operations, environmental concerns and on-water courtesy; legal requirements such as age restrictions, registration, safety equipment and state laws; and emergency response, including risk management, accidents, injuries, weather emergencies and how to get help or assist others.
The cost is $35 per adult and $15 for a second family member. Teens attend free. Those who complete the course and pass the exam receive certificates and a Florida State Boater’s ID card.
