INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A wind chill advisory has been issued for several areas along Florida’s eastern seaboard, where temperatures are expected to drop sharply overnight, creating hazardous conditions for residents and visitors early Friday morning.
The National Weather Service warned that wind chills could fall as low as 27 degrees in Indian River County, Coastal St. Lucie County, Inland Martin County, the Northern Brevard Barrier Islands and the Southern Brevard Barrier Islands. The advisory takes effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. EST on Friday, with the coldest readings likely during the pre-dawn hours.
Forecasters said the combination of brisk winds and dropping temperatures may present dangers to anyone without proper protection from the cold, particularly those lacking access to heated shelters, warm clothing or other means of staying insulated. “These conditions can be especially dangerous for vulnerable populations,” the weather service noted in its alert, stressing the requirement for precautions amid the unseasonably chilly weather gripping the region.
Local officials urged residents to exercise caution if venturing outdoors, recommending layered clothing, hats and gloves to guard against the biting chill. Pet owners were advised to keep animals indoors whenever possible to prevent exposure.
Authorities also stressed the importance of checking on elderly family members, friends and neighbors who might be more susceptible to the cold.
In addition, forecasters remind people to use portable heaters according to manufacturer instructions and to never operate generators or grills indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
The cold snap comes as a front moves through the Southeast, bringing a brief but sharp dip in temperatures to areas more accustomed to milder winter weather.
