Update: Tropical Storm Fred; Another Tropical Wave Forms in Atlantic

Current tropics in the Atlantic.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is now monitoring another tropical wave that formed overnight in the Atlantic as Tropical Storm Fred moves over the Dominican Republic this morning.

The wave, called Invest 95L, is located over the eastern tropical Atlantic several hundred miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. The disturbance is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms.

Invest 95L is on the same track as Tropical Storm Fred.

“Some gradual development of this system is possible, and a tropical depression could form by early next week while moving generally westward across the tropical Atlantic near 20 mph. This system could reach portions of the Leeward Islands by late Saturday,” the National Hurricane Center said

The chance of formation is 40 percent. Most of the computer models agree that this system will travel west to the northwest near the Bahamas in the coming days. These are early estimates, and it’s too early to predict tracking.

We will continue to monitor Invest 95L.

Tropical Storm Fred

As Sebastian Daily mentioned yesterday, Tropical Storm Fred has formed in the Caribbean Sea and is moving toward the west-northwest near 16 mph, and a general west-northwestward motion is expected to begin later today.

Sebastian could feel some impact of Fred on Saturday and Sunday as it moves along Florida’s west coast.

“On the forecast track, the center of Fred is expected to be near or over Hispaniola later today, move near the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas on Thursday and move north of the northern coast of central Cuba on Friday,” the NHC said.

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph with higher gusts. Some weakening is expected while the storm interacts with Hispaniola today.

The cone of uncertainty has not changed since yesterday for Tropical Storm Fred. As of last night, the system moved slightly to the west. Sebastian is still in Fred’s potential path as of this morning. However, that may change later today.

Fred will have a lot of land interaction with Cuba, which could potentially slow the system down before it gets closer to Florida.
