The National Hurricane Center said Wednesday that Tropical Storm Dorian is expected to become a category 2 hurricane before making landfall north of Sebastian later this weekend.
“Nearly all of the intensity models show Dorian becoming a hurricane in about 2 days, with additional strengthening beyond that time,” the NHC said in a statement.
Dorian’s track has moved farther north of Sebastian since Tuesday, and some models predict the storm continuing a northern direction near the border of Florida and Georgia.
Dorian is expected to produce maximum sustained winds of 100 mph as a category 2 while making landfall in northern Florida.
Hurricane watches are in effect for Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Tropical Storm Dorian is located about 60 miles of St. Croix with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph. Dorian is moving to the northwest at 13 mph.
Gov. Ron DeSantis said all Florida residents on the east coast should prepare for impacts from Dorian. He encouraged everyone to have supplies ready and to follow the storm updates.
