Last night, Sebastian Daily reported that Hurricane Isaias was strengthening to a Category 1 storm. Further strengthening is possible, but at this time, forecasters do not think there’s going to be a direct hit in Sebastian, Florida.
“Strengthening is expected during the next day or so while the hurricane remains over the very warm waters near the Bahamas with reasonably low vertical shear,” the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in a statement.
Indian River County is currently under a tropical storm watch, which will most likely be upgraded to a hurricane watch.
We can expect heavy rains in Sebastian associated with Isaias as it travels along the coast of Florida. These rains will begin Friday night and into the weekend.
As of right now, Sebastian will feel the worst part of the storm from Sunday at 2:00 a.m. until Sunday at 2:00 p.m. There is a risk of impacts from winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surge late this weekend.
“The details of the track and intensity forecast remain uncertain, and it is too soon to determine the magnitude and location of these potential impacts, but interests along the entire U.S. east coast should monitor the progress of Isaias and updates to the forecast,” the NHC said.
If a Category 1 hurricane hits Sebastian directly, we will experience maximum sustained winds between 74 mph to 110 mph. Isaias is not considered to be a major hurricane at this time. Changes are possible during the next 24 hours.
