SEBASTIAN – A combination of above normal temperatures and high humidity will produce peak heat index readings Monday between 101 and 106, according to the National Weather Service.
“If working or participating in outdoor recreational activities, take frequent breaks out of the sun and drink plenty of water,” the National Weather Service said in a statement.
Here’s some CDC Tips for Preventing Heat-Related Illness:
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
- Stay in an air-conditioned place as much as possible. If your home does not have air conditioning, go to the shopping mall or public library – even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat.
- Limit your outdoor activity to when it’s coolest, like morning and evening hours. Get into a cool area or into the shade, and rest, especially if you become lightheaded, confused, weak, or faint.
- Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and by putting on sunscreen.
- Do not leave children or pets in cars, even with the windows cracked open.
- Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
If you’re headed to the beach to escape the heat, remember that a High Risk for dangerous Rip Currents continues in the surf zone. Swim only within sight of a lifeguard, and never swim alone.
