On April 22, 2020, three City Council members had an illegal meeting in Sebastian, Florida. They fired city staff and appointed one of themselves as the new Mayor. Residents called the move a coup during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While one cooperated with the States Attorney’s Office, the other two took the case to trial. Damien Gilliams and Pamela Parris were found guilty by a jury and later sentenced to jail.
