INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Florida Highway Patrol officials are investigating a fatal crash involving a bicyclist and a Semi-truck that occurred early Tuesday west of U.S. 1 in the area of 19th Avenue Southwest, the agency said.
The bicyclist was not in a crosswalk, according to Lt. Kevin Jaworski, a spokesperson for the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office. Jaworski added that the bicyclist was not riding in a bicycle lane.
Troopers responded to the scene at 5:39 a.m. at the intersection of 19th Avenue Southwest and Oslo Road in Indian River County. Exact details about the crash or the identities of those killed were not immediately available.
The bicyclist, who was riding a black mountain bike, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to David Rattray, deputy chief with Indian River County Fire Rescue.
A roadblock was set up in the area as investigators worked the scene, and motorists were advised to avoid the intersection if possible. The road was reopened by 11:30 a.m.
The crash remains under investigation, and further information will be released as it becomes available, FHP said.
