The Sebastian River High School Sharks football players of the week are seniors Devon Dawkins (#34) and Nicholas Hernandez (#6).
They both have exceptional work ethic, academic achievements, and a passion for football. These two student athletes embody the heart and soul of the Sharks’ program, inspiring their teammates and the entire Sebastian community.
Devon Dawkins #34

Senior standout football player Devon Dawkins is making a name for himself both as a dedicated athlete and an aspiring civil engineer. He carries a 3.0 GPA and a clear vision for his future; Dawkins is a prime example of the discipline and focus that define the Sharks’ program.
Dawkins has been playing football his entire life and credits the sport with shaping his character.
“I’ve been playing my whole life,” he said, reflecting on the lessons learned through years on the gridiron. His coaches have been instrumental in his growth. “The coaches have helped me to be better on and off the field,” Dawkins explained. “You have to be disciplined and focused, whether it’s during life or on the field.”
One of Dawkins’ fondest football memories is the camaraderie in the locker room before games. “Being with the team, coming together as one—that’s what I love most,” he shared. These moments of unity have strengthened his connection to his teammates and fueled his passion for the sport.
Looking beyond high school, Dawkins has ambitious plans to attend college and pursue a career in civil engineering, with a focus on welding. His interest in this hands-on field reflects his desire to build and create, combining technical skill with real-world impact.
Dawkins took a moment to give a heartfelt shoutout to his biggest supporters: “Thank you to my brothers, pops, mom, and family—they’ve been there for me through everything.”
As Sebastian River High School continues its season, Dawkins’ blend of athletic talent, academic commitment, and clear career goals makes him a standout in the spotlight. The Sharks’ community is proud to cheer for #34 as he paves the way for a bright future both on the field and in the world of engineering.
Coach Perry praises Dawkins’ adaptability, noting, “He has some positional adaptability, as he can line up on the interior of the defensive line, with his hand in the ground at the defensive end, or as a stand-up outside linebacker. He is working extremely hard to be the leader of the defensive line. He’s taken pride in his hard work and in the weight room.”
“What he lacks in size, he makes up for with tenacity and gets off. We are looking for him to take the next step and become a team leader. He’s found a home in the defensive line.
We look forward to watching him become an important piece of our defense this season. Once he learns to channel that energy, he will make a lot of plays for us this season,” Perry added.
Nicholas Hernandez #6

Nicholas Hernandez is making waves both on the football field and in the classroom. Boasting an impressive 3.875 GPA, this dedicated student-athlete has his sights set on a college career in business and marketing, with Syracuse University as his dream destination.
While he plans to walk on to the football team at his chosen college, Nicholas’s academic excellence and relentless drive are what truly set him apart.
For four years, Hernandez has been a dynamic presence on the field, playing both wide receiver and defensive back. Though he has yet to receive football offers, his determination to earn a spot on a college roster reflects his unwavering commitment.
He credits Coaches Perry and Freeman for shaping his journey, not only improving his skills but also molding him into a better person. “They’ve pushed me to grow in every way,” Nicholas says, highlighting their profound impact on his development.
One of his favorite memories includes gearing up with his teammates before games.
When he’s not on the field, Nicholas enjoys cooking. For three years, he has honed his skills as a cook at Captain Hiram’s Resort in Sebastian, bringing creativity and precision to the kitchen.
Hernandez’s journey is fueled by the support of his coaches, friends, and especially his mother, whom he credits for believing in him every step of the way. “I wouldn’t be here without them,” he said.
Nicholas Hernandez embodies the spirit of a true scholar-athlete. Whether he’s making plays on the field, excelling in the classroom, or crafting dishes, this Sebastian River senior is poised for success. Keep an eye on #6 as he chases his dreams at Syracuse and beyond.
Coach Perry appreciates Hernandez’s strong work ethic and the fact that he sets a high standard for his teammates.
“A senior player with a strong work ethic, he sets the bar for the rest of the team. We hope his dedication and loyalty will translate to both individual and team success. His daily effort and attitude set the standard for the entire wide receiver position group, Perry told Sebastian Daily.
“Nicholas’s daily habits in practice serve as a model for younger players. The most progress I’ve seen in him is his work ethic in the weight room, during practice, and off-season workouts. We’re hoping that it allows him to be a player who will have a big emphasis on us winning a game, whether blocking or catching, this year,” Perry added.
