June L. Phillips passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 30, 2025, in Manassas, Virginia, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, James and Cynthia Furman, after an evening surrounded by many loving family members.
She was born in Washington, D.C., to John K. Stockham and Sarah Esther (Pitts) Stockham, and grew up in Lanexa, Virginia, and Brandywine, Maryland, where she attended school before attending Salisbury State Teachers College. There, she met her first husband, Robert F. Schilling.
June was predeceased by her first husband, Robert Schilling; her second husband, Ward Berthoff; her third husband, Jack Phillips; her siblings, Nancy and Donnie Prevish; and her son-in-law, Orrin Whyte.
She is survived by her children: Julie Whyte, Cynthia and James Furman, Robert and Jennifer Schilling, and Melanie and Robert Polyanchek. She was a devoted grandmother to 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly.
June was a longtime resident of Sebastian, Florida, and previously lived in Tequesta, Florida. She was health-conscious and enjoyed walking nearly every day. Her love of history inspired years of family genealogy research, and she generously shared her knowledge and investigative skills to help others trace their family roots.
She made countless friends during her daily walks along the beaches of Sebastian and through her neighborhood strolls. She had an incredible memory—able to recall every person and even their pets—and delighted in sharing fascinating stories from her childhood. She fondly remembered attending vaudeville shows and seeing The Wizard of Oz premiere in theaters, recalling how the audience gasped in awe when Dorothy stepped into the colorful world of Oz.
A lifelong learner, June embraced new experiences with enthusiasm. She took up tai chi, mastered her cell phone, and became quite proficient with her computer. Her curiosity, sharp mind, and kind spirit will be remembered by all who knew & loved her.
