Last weekend, volunteers with the Treasure Coast Waterway Cleanup collected 892 pounds of garbage along the waterfront starting at the Main Street boat ramp in Sebastian.

The Marine Industries Association of the Treasure Coast hosted the 4-hour event that collected garbage from the Sebastian Saltwater Marina Restaurant to Riverview Park and the nearby spoil islands.

Among some of the trash-related items found along the waterfront were 300 square feet of carpet, cups, and fishing lines.

Vice Mayor Fred Jones also participated as a volunteer for the trash collection.

“Some of the main things found that is detrimental to our wildlife and our ecosystem out there is we found a lot of plastic bottles and styrofoam cups and fishing line,” Jones said.

Jones is asking everyone to pick up any trash they may see in the Indian River Lagoon to help provide a healthy environment.

Some of the people who also volunteered for the event were Kim Hiagler of the City of Sebastian, Charles Stadelman and other members of the Natural Resources Board, and CrossFit in Sebastian
