Florida’s recreational flounder fishing season will reopen on December 1, 2023, and close on October 15, 2024. Sebastian fishing has seen another uptick in activity following a recent cold front.

Anglers should be aware of the following flounder regulations:

Regarding fishing gear, the use of spears, gigs, hook and line, seine, and cast nets is legal. However, using multiple hooks with live or dead natural bait is prohibited, as is snatching.

Recent weather changes have improved water clarity at the Sebastian Inlet, attracting snook, pompano, and flounder. The upcoming warmer weekend is expected to offer pleasant fishing conditions.

Flounders are bottom-dwellers, known for their flat shape and eyes on one side of their head. These fish vary from 5 to 30 pounds and are appreciated for their mild, slightly sweet flavor and flaky texture. They can be prepared in various ways, including baking, broiling, frying, sauteing, and steaming.

Local live bait like Finger Mullet, Shrimp, Cut Bait, or Soft Plastic Lures is recommended for successful flounder fishing. Each bait type has its advantages, with shrimp being effective near local docks and jetties, while cut bait like bluefish works well due to its strong scent.
